The time away from Anfield will have been much needed for Liverpool players and supporters alike after they suffered through a miserable week of results ahead of the March international break, crashing out of the Champions League on penalties to PSG and losing 2-1 to Newcastle United in the League Cup final.

Those two losses were the club’s first in over a month, the most recent defeat beforehand being the 0-1 FA Cup loss to Plymouth Argyle. Now, the chance to claim a first win for several weeks over bitter crosstown rivals is a tantalising prospect.

Everton, though, will be equally motivated to extend that losing run to three matches. The reverse fixture, a 2-2 draw and the last Merseyside derby to ever be played at Goodison Park, made for a fine send-off for the ‘Grand Old Lady,’ as James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute volley sent the Blues into rapture.

Their form is remarkably middle-of-the-road, coming into the fixture with four consecutive draws to Manchester United, Brentford, Wolves, and West Ham, but they will face an uphill battle to add a tally to the ‘win’ column on Wednesday.
