Will fifth place in Premier League earn Champions League qualification? Latest coefficient standings

The race for the extra places in next season’s Champions League is hotting up.

Last year, Borussia Dortmund and Bologna were handed the two spots, as a result of Bundesliga and Serie A clubs enjoying success in Europe.

The two leagues with the best coefficient, which is the collective performance of all clubs from that country in European competitions, are given an extra place in the Champions League.

Those places go to the first clubs in the domestic table outside of the usual Champions League qualification positions, which in the Premier League is fifth.

Across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, each win is worth two points for the coefficient, with one earned for a draw. A win in the Conference League is worth just as much as one in the Champions League.

In a knockout matches, the score after 120 minutes is used, so it will be deemed a tie for coefficient purposes if it goes to penalties, regardless of who wins the shootout.

The total points gained by all clubs from a particularly country are added together and then divided by the number of clubs from that division competing in European competitions.

There were seven Premier League clubs in Europe this season, so the total number of points earned by those sides is divided by seven to calculate the coefficient.

Bonus points are also awarded depending on where clubs finished in the league phase and then for each knockout round. For those, performance in the Champions League is more valuable than the Europa League, which is more valuable than the Conference League.
